The LIVER plays many vital roles within the body and its incredibly important to keep it healthy. It cleanses the blood of toxins and waste, produces bile, stores nutrients, converts amino acids… to name just a few of its processes. I am not going to go into how the liver works as its complicated and not necessary but the liver is vulnerable to toxic substances because it's responsible for metabolising and excreting foreign chemicals from the body.
Springtime is synonymous with a “spring clean” but not just in your home, also within your body. A gentle cleanse when the Earth is getting warmer, when we feel the need to move more can really help to support our bodies as we move seasons.
Practising a gentle cleanse during the Spring can be a wonderful way of moving any stagnant energy in your body left over from the more sedate time of Winter. This could simply be upping your exercise, dry brushing, drinking more water or visiting saunas regularly or you could try following an actual detox plan. I love the advice from Hands, Herbs Healing who I trained with years ago, however, my main piece of advice is to go gently. Detox’s are wonderful, but very powerful and we often forget how our body might be feeling, especially if we are someone often led by the mind.
It’s very common for people to plunge into a detox in the New Year (which is the time of Water/ Winter - not Wood/Spring) after a period of over indulgence and little movement, but this can completely dysregulate the body, with negative effects. It’s also worth mentioning that a detox is not something one should just “do” and then return to living a toxic life (again quite common place in society). There is no magic pill that’s going to make everything suddenly work better - but time, dedication and connection to your own body is whats needed.. and this can feel challenging, especially in the fast-paced in world we live in. Slow but steady, gradual changes is the way forwards.
Here is a quick and delicious recipe I first got from Jill Davies when I studied with her in 2012 - she called it is a “Liver Cleanse” and I love to make this when I feel the need or am feeling a bit sluggish. I often add in a touch of apple cider vinegar too
Get a nutribullet or small blender and add in 1/4 a cup pressed organic apple juice. Followed by another 1/4 cup water. Add in the juice of 1 1/2 lemons, 1 garlic clove, ginger, fresh turmeric (powered is fine if you cant get fresh), half a chilli (optional) and a good glug of olive oil (this seems weird but makes it tricky and creamy). I often add a dash of apple cider vinegar too.
Blitz up and enjoy!
BEING MORE AWARE OF THE CHEMICALS AND TOXINS THAT ARE AROUND US
THE CLEAN 15 AND THE DIRTY DOZEN
Have you heard of this?
It’s a list of the best foods to buy organic and the ones to avoid.
Generally speaking, it’s quite easy to know how to judge if things “need” to be organic or not, by looking at the skins of the vegetables/ fruits and seeing how thin it is. This is relevant as, if the item has say a thin skin and has been heavily sprayed with pesticides, the sprays will permeate the skin and going inside the item - things like berries or grapes for example. However thick-skinned items like avocado or coconut would be better.
It’s worth checking every year online as the lists do change slightly. You can check HERE

think of your environment
It’s also worth thinking about your home environment.
What toxic things do you have around you?
Look at your kitchen equipment - tupperwares, water bottles, zip lock bags, tin foil… we can chat over this more on our live session but its good to become aware of the environment you are choosing to live in.
Air fresheners, candles - are often pretty toxic - its always worth knowing how these products are made and the quality of the ingredients used.
What is your water quality like - filtered or tap?
What household products do you use? I go into detail on this a touch more in the Recipes, Practises and Ritual session coming up next.
