CHRYSTANTHENUM - In the modern Chinese Medicinal guides, the chrysanthemum is listed among the cooling herbs for “relieving the surface” (or “releasing the exterior”). The flowers are also often utilised to promote circulation, cool the body, preserve vitality, and provide some properties akin to those of the tonic herbs.

The chrysanthemum is sweet, bitter, and cool-natured, and according to Traditional Chinese Medicine has the potency to expel wind, clear away heat, calm the liver, improve acuity of sight, subdue inflammation, and expel toxic substances. It is used as an exterior syndrome relieving herb, pungent in flavour and cool in property, to treat wind-heat syndrome and swelling and it can even be used to treat cardiovascular diseases and hypertension due to its cooling and pressure/swelling relieving functions. High blood pressure is also a kind of “wind rising upward”, which can cause headaches, dizziness and light-headedness. Combined with honeysuckle flowers, chrysanthemums have been known to effectively reduce blood pressure.

When incorporated into a treatment, chrysanthemum tends to clear heat in the upper body. For conditions like the common cold, upper respiratory infection, and tonsillitis that are categorised as an external invasion of wind and heat. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, chrysanthemum is usually combined with mulberry leaf, peppermint and platycodon root for relieving fever, headache and coughing. For red and itchy eyes, adding the flower to your diet can help nourish yourlLiver and benefit your vision, thus clearing visual discomfort.

pRACTIcE

Continue to pay attention to your thoughts and perhaps start to journal around your thoughts and nervous system reactions.

What sensations do you feel in the body?

Where are they felt and during what times or with what emotions?

The more you can get clear with these feelings and how and where they are felt will really help you begin to understand your reactions more.

Also, continuing to pay attention to the narratives in your head - the should have, could haves, would haves. Any blame, shame or guilt - again often highlights old behavioural patterns and stories we choose to hold on to

Go for a walk in nature - we know that nature has a wonderfully soothing effect on our nervous systems and it’s also a great way to practise orientation and focusing on the world outside of us.

I am over the moon that James is going to be joining us as the Guest Speaker for this weeks section. Its such an honour as his extensive work on the nervous system and precious lived experience with nervous system dysregulation really illuminated the importance of understanding how this often over looked aspect of our being can literally control us.

For more information on James please head HERE - I highly recommend his breathwork and his wonderful findings and learning on Jung (he is training as a Jungian analyst)

orientation

Orientation the practise of bringing your mind and body back to the present moment - connecting to the environment, your senses, sound, temperature, smells. It can involve looking around, moving your neck slightly and becoming aware to your external environment.

This is where I believe cooking can be a very useful tool.

For example we made sourdough last week together. This process of creating, touching and engaging with the ingredients can have a wonderfully settling effect on the Nervous System. Creativity and connecting to your senses can be the perfect partnership for bringing mind and body back into balance - your mind finds it very difficult to be in a negative bias if creating - so get creative!

Did you know that our brain has an inbuilt negativity bias. This is actually a protective action to keep us safe (this has served us well through out evolution - caution over carefree). By becoming aware of your internal dialog can really help take first steps towards change. Going further.. are you able to distinguish if you are overwhelmed (or going out of your window of capacity) in your internal or external world (which we touched upon earlier in this module).

When we are stuck in a negative bias it can become almost addictive and very hard to get out of - so finding ways to literally tether you back to your SAFETY can be hugely effective and the kitchen can be a wonderful space for this.

Really engaging in the act of cooking - feeling the slicing, stiring, tasting things, squeezing, smelling - all help to connect you to your senses, distract you from your thoughts and allow you to engage with loved ones whilst eating together.

“Orientation feeds your nervous system with stabilising information that supports its return to ventral” James Dowler.

Obviously it doesn’t all need to be around the kitchen and cooking - getting outside can be wonderful - anything that can help to ground you in the present moment and with your senses

We will cover this more during our talk with James Dowler this week.

MOVEMENT

SHAKE IT OUT

If you are in an activated state one of the best exercises to do is to literally shake it out. Think of the nature programs you have seen on TV when the Giselle is chased by a lion and once the threat is gone, it stands there, and has a big shake out. Its now been researched that when they are doing this, they are literally shaking the stress off their bodies.

Simply stand with your legs hip distance apart, so you are feeling well supported and have a really good shake. Either that or play some loud music and have a bit of a boogie. You will literally be discharging the energy from your body.
