Beetroot Klauz

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, winter calls for deeply nourishing blood-building foods, and beet kvass is a powerhouse of support during this season.

According to TCM, this fermented tonic helps strengthen the Blood and support the Liver system - exactly what we need when winter’s Yin energy is at its peak.

Its wonderful for the digestion, especially due to its mildly fermented nature, it supports building blood and Qi, provides a gentle liver cleanse and builds and strengthens our immunity.
Start with small amounts, maybe just a shot glass to start and gradually increase.

This is great for women with monthly cycles wanting to replenish their blood stores and a wonderful fermented food / drink to add to your repertoire.

I made this years ago with Amber Rose but more recently made it with the Academy of Healing Nutrition.

This is their recipe.

Get 3 or 4 beetroots (ideally organic) cut into large ish chunks

1 litre water

Enough salt for the water to taste salty but not overwhelming. Approx a large teaspoon.

Add a couple of tablespoons of whey (or sauerkraut juices).

Cover with some muslin and leave on the side for up to a week. It will get darker, bubbles can come, it should stay healthy at the top with my mould as it’s covered well but you might get some impurities and bubbles rise to the top. Thats ok you can scoop that off when tasting or use a tissue to soak them up off the top of the beet water.

You want it to taste slightly sour, bubbly and beetrooty. It slightly thickens too.

When it’s ready.

Strain away the beetroot and store in the fridge in a bottle.

I have a shot glass of it whenever I remember xx

Remember you have to trust your senses - if something doesn’t smell or taste right you know. If you see mould of something that you dont feel comfortable with, throw it out. Take responsibility for the food you eat.

PRACTICE

Have you listened to -

You have kept a journal through out this course, however for the water element it can be a lovely time to keep a sleep journal.

What is a sleep journal?

CRYSTALS - Blue lace agate amethyst blue fluorite

ESSENTIAL OILS - to nourish the end of water rose and rainy and to nourish the Yang of water clove ginger Jasmine

SELF CARE - rest and preserve your energy, silence is an important practise to nourish the water element. Meditation and connected your inner wisdom. Keep a dream diary”

The WATER element is all about conserving your energy and slowing down. It’s duvet days, keeping warm. Making sure your lower back and kidneys are warm and protected. Staying well hydrated. Enjoyed slow cooked and easy to digest meals.

Resist the urge to do more, make plans etc - LET GO.

Add dark coloured beans, pulses into the diet to support your kidneys

HAVE YOU HEARD OF CHAKRAS?

This is a huge topic, however, I have found learning more about areas like CHAKRAS has been an incredible way to begin to look at the body in a different way.

A wonderful book for this is “Easter Body, Western Mind”.

The chakras are energy points with in the body. There are thousands of energy channels with in our bodies but 7 main areas in the body where these channels meet.

Here is a simple diagram showing the chakra points and what they mean. It can be helpful to just have an understanding of them and their energetics

Black sesame seed is such a powerful rejuvenate. A perfect food to restore our Kidney energy and thus helping boost our body’s deepest reserves, our Jing - our internal battery as you may have heard me refer to.

Depleted Jing and low Kidney energy can look like exhaustion, lack of will, fearfulness, coldness in the body, signs of aging, issues with health of bone & teeth, low libido, reproductive issues & urinary issues, to name a few.

Our Kidneys are considered the root of Yin / Yang balance in our body. To have strong Kidney energy is fundamental if we are to have vital health. Remember, everything is connected. Our organ systems depend on one another.

Black sesame is the perfect Winter tonic (Water Element | Kidney & Bladder & Adrenals). Benefits include: Blood nourishing, tonify Jing, supplement our Yin (fluids) (and any breast feeding mamas out there, know that these also help promote milk quality). Help to keep your body lubricated all year, but in particular through the Winter when our Kidney system is most receptive.

PUTTING THINGS INTO PRACTISE WITH MEALS AND ROUTINES

Start the day right.

On waking have a glass of water to help hydrate and after this have a warm glass of lemon and water to help to alkalise the body. Why is this a good idea? Because….

Try to begin to think of the ORGAN CLOCK and see if you can roughly plan your day around it to help support your body as much as possible

Clean out cupboards - have a look through your store cupboard and see whats in there. Go back to Module One section “Storecupboard” and see what new ingredients you could buy and experiment with.

REMEMBER TO -

  • Soak oats and grains

  • Add seaweed to your grains whilst cooking

  • Think of ways to boost your food as much as possible - adding seaweed to pesto, adding miso to soups, adding collagen to drinks etc

  • Think of layering up your dishes - remember to think of textures such as - crunch like nuts and seeds, silky smooth things like yoghurt or tofu, popping things like cherry tomatoes, rough textures like nut butters etc

  • Try to notice how you are feeling and see if you can begin to keep either a journal or a dream journal (or both)

  • Can you work in some movement into your day? Walking, yoga etc

Hopefully you have started to become more aware of your thoughts and your environment - both through becoming more aware of the thoughts in your head and ways to help become more mindful ie writing your journal, nervous system support excerisses etc. You environment - hopefully becoming more aware of your home and whats around you.

GROUNDING CHORD

For this you can sit or stand and if it feels safe to do so, close your eyes. Visualise a chord running from the base of your spine, down, all the day down into the soil. Going all the way down into the centre of the Earth, like a thick, robust rope that connects you to the deepest, most central part of the planet. Visualise this powerful connection, how deeply rooted you are to the Earth with this chord and allow yourself a few minutes to feel this connection, though your feet - literally grounding you to the floor. Feel the universal energy rising up and down through your feel, like you are one together. Remember to try and connect to your breathing with nice long inhales and exhales. When you are ready bring yourself back to the environment.

The importance of SUPPORT AND TOUCH when you have a sensitive nervous system – this might seem like an odd thing to say but if you have a nervous system that is often screaming at you, having people around to help maintain it will really help. I have personally found regular Chiropractor sessions hugely useful, as well as massage, reiki etc. Building a community of people that you can trust and help to tune you in to your bodies needs can prove very powerful
